Naomi Campbell 'Fulfills a Childhood Fantasy' in New Duran Duran Video
The 10-minute film features the model and a band of fellow "Supers"
“I grew up dancing to Duran Duran,” Naomi Campbell tells PEOPLE, “running after them and waiting for them outside the BBC. They were my life — even though they never noticed me back then!”
They’re obviously noticing her now: Campbell plays frontman Simon Le Bon in the band’s new “Girl Panic!” video, a 10-minute clip that also stars “Supers” Cindy Crawford, Helena Christensen, Eva Herzigova and Simon’s wife Yasmin. The video premiered Monday at British Harper’s Bazaar‘s Women of the Year awards in London — and it’s safe to say it’ll be a big hit.
“We’ve always had a great time together,” Yasmin says. “All the girls have known the band forever, and we’ve all hung out backstage and at fashion shows, and over time the two have kind of merged together.” Calling the model casting a “stroke of genius,” Yasmin says the shoot was “a lot of fun. We got to show some humor as well as the sexy side of the band.”
The video of course showed a stylish side, too; Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana styled the Supers, who were dripping in designer fashions and Swarovski crystals. In fact, Swarovski played a large role in the film; the company’s “Elements” added sparkle to the microphone used by Naomi Campbell (it was covered in nearly 700 crystals!) and adorned the models’ guitar straps — a touch the band particularly loved.
Though the collaboration was likely a one-time deal, it was quite memorable. For Campbell, playing Simon “fulfilled one of my childhood fantasies,” she says. “We had a great time together making this classic Duran video.”
