Maren Morris rocked “retro” curls for her big night at the 50th CMA Awards, completing her look with a bedazzled black-and-gold gown on Wednesday night.

“My performance tonight is really soulful and throwback, so I really wanted my hair to feel retro and kind of ’70s, ’60s-ish, so I went with the big curly hair… and it’s the 50th, so I feel like we have to bring out all the stops,” the new artist of the year winner PEOPLE on the red carpet. “Bring it back!”

Morris’ hair was styled by Marwa Bashir from Parlour & Juke, but she also revealed that her current style icon at the moment is actress Kate Hudson and described her as “timeless.”

“I’ve always loved Kate Hudson. I feel like you could put a potato sack 0n that girl and she will look stunning, so yeah,” she said. “I love her style.”

Morris looked amazing in what is sure to be one of the best looks of the night, but admitted that it takes many hours to get red carpet ready.

“Getting this mane styled takes a village, as they say,” the “’80s Mercedes” singer joked.

The 26-year-old was up for five awards at the CMAs: album of the year for “Hero,” song of the year for her song “My Church,” which also nabbed a nomination for single of the year, as well as female vocalist of the year and ended up taking home new artist of the year.

2016 has been a major year for the singer, between touring with Keith Urban, receiving texts from Dierks Bentley with an invitation to sing a duet, and sharing the ACM awards red carpet with her hero, Dolly Parton.

“It seems like almost every day I’ve been able to cross things off my bucket list,” Morris told PEOPLE in April of the opportunities that have come her way since her self-penned “My Church” caught fire.

“I want to be as gracious and thankful as I can because it has been a long road,” she said. “I’m young but I’ve been doing this a long time. There’s obviously a lot of hard work that goes into it. It’s a hard town. There’s a lot of talent here. It’s all about timing, too. I just feel like I finally found the right town and the right song.”
