In case, after yesterday’s flood of #TBTs on Instagram, you needed one more thing to highlight how quickly time flies by and make you feel older than you already do, Malia and Sasha Obama attended their very first state dinner on Thursday night at the White House, causing us all to reflect on how exactly these two girls have transformed into elegant young women before our eyes.

And clearly we’re not the only ones feeling the sands of time slipping through our fingers. Delivering his opening remarks, President Obama became emotional when speaking about his daughters, saying, “When I was first elected to this office, Malia was just 10 and Sasha was 7. And they grow up too fast. Now Malia is going off to college … And I’m starting to choke up.”

Thankfully, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who was honored at the dinner, was able to add a little levity to the situation. As the son of a former Canadian prime minister himself, he praised the President’s daughters for their poise and fortitude while growing up in the spotlight.

“Quite frankly, the memories for me of being a kid and not being old enough to attend these kinds of events with my father almost makes me wish I had gone through my teenage years as a child of a world leader — but not quite,” he joked, before adding. “I admire you very much, both of you, for your extraordinary strength and your grace, through what is a remarkable childhood and young adulthood that will give you extraordinary strength and wisdom beyond your years for the rest of your life. The one thing that you have received from your extraordinary parents is the tools to be able to handle the challenges and the opportunities in front of you. ”

We already couldn’t believe how much the girls have grown back when we were comparing photos of their first turkey pardon to their last one, but in their evening dresses at the State Dinner, the change was more evident than ever. Obama’s daughters fully looked the part of elegant young ladies, showing off their grown-up sense of style in Naeem Khan, with Malia wearing a strapless taupe gown with a smattering of rhinestone embellishment and glossy waves, while Sasha opted for a high neckline gown with an ornate raspberry lace yoke, plus trendy double braids and a ribbon choker. And even though both look beautiful, we — just like their dad — can’t help but think of them as the cute little girls we first met eight years ago.
