You’ve seen her take the stage on Dance Moms. She’s starred in three of Sia’s music videos. And she even made a cameo in the Pretty Little Liars season finale. But now, Maddie Ziegler is stealing the spotlight with her very own gig (and a stylish one at that!) as the newest brand ambassador for Betsey Johnson’s colorful new collection for dance performance label Capezio. We chatted with both the 12-year-old starlet and the designer for all the exclusive details on their dancewear partnership.

Johnson has teamed up with the iconic dancewear label to create a line of fun, bright pieces, including leotards, leggings, camis, graphic tees, briefs and, of course, tutus, for young girls, featuring her eclectic prints and patterns (think: bright-pink roses and lots of plaid!). And the designer tapped the 12-year-old Dance Moms star, whom she met on the set of Dancing with the Stars, to front the colorful campaign.

“My little stint, my very little stint [on Dancing with the Stars], is where I met Maddie backstage. And we just boom! I had to go on next and she came off stage and she said hi to me. I’m like, ‘Who is this miracle person?’ Because I just saw her for the first time on the screens backstage,” she tells PEOPLE. “So it was really crazy that we met, because I think that we did, that’s why this is happening. Capezio was in the works, but I asked Capezio, ‘You’ve got to have a front man, and it’s got to be Maddie, because she’s the inspiration for her time.’ ”

For her part, Ziegler couldn’t be more thrilled to work with Johnson and the brand that she practically lives in — on and off the stage.

“I’m just really excited because it’s not just plain colors and basic — it’s fun, and I feel like more kids will really like this because I feel like young kids aren’t just wearing plain colors; everyone loves patterns and they’re really in right now,” Ziegler tells PEOPLE. “This is just a really fun and comfy dancewear, but also you can wear it out with your friends. It’s not like you can only wear this to dance.”

Ziegler learned quickly the importance of fun costumes and colorful makeup from years in the dancing world; she’s been competing since she was 6 years old. And she says that when it comes to her onstage beauty routine, she does it all herself.

“My mom used to do [my makeup] when I first started dancing, but she’s awful at it, so I learned myself,” Ziegler says. “I don’t let her touch my face anymore, even my hair — she’s just not talented in the beauty department. So I kind of just learned myself, and now I do it on all my sisters and myself, and I do it on all of my friends. I was like, ‘You know what? I’m sick of my mom doing this because she’s so bad,’ so I just learned to do it myself.”

As for her future, Ziegler hopes to branch into acting.

“I definitely want to continue dancing the rest of my life, but I also want to act and do like scripted TV shows or a movie or something,” she says. “Not just like one movie, but a lot of movies! And I think it would be cool to do like, an acting and dancing movie, like a Step Up movie or something like that. But also serious movies.”
