If you haven’t been keeping up with Lupita Nyong’o’s latest red carpet looks, allow us to bring you up to speed. Just over the last week at the Toronto International Film Festival she’s worn printed, brightly-colored outfits that have us bowing down to the Queen of TIFF style. We can’t get enough of her zig-zag geometric print jumpsuit, ornate blue and yellow Carolina Herrera gown, flirty fit-and-flare dress and the seriously impressive selection of gorgeous head wraps worn throughout.

The Queen of Katwe actress sat down with PEOPLE during the film festival to talk about how her red carpet style has evolved since her breakout awards show season in 2014. “I’ve always enjoyed playing dress-up before the red carpet and even after,” Nyong’o says.

But while her style star has only gotten brighter over time, there’s one thing that has changed since the beginning. “I’ve grown more playful,” she shares. “It’s not as precious as it once was. That first time at TIFF there was so much I didn’t understand.”

While she always picked very fashionable pieces, there was a learning curve on her posing technique. “I remember my first red carpet someone said, ‘Over the shoulder!’ and I said ‘I’ll do it when you tell me how.’ I had no idea, and now of course I feel more comfortable and playful.”
