When the leaves change, it’s had to resist changing your lipstick to something a little moodier too – like the deep, vampy shade that stars including Lucy Hale, Chrissy Teigen and Shay Mitchell have been wearing. We turned to Hale’s go-to makeup artist, Kelsey Deenihan, who showed us not only how to create the look — but also how to keep it on all day long. Watch the How It’s Done video above for Deenihan’s tricks, and shop her must-have products, below.
The trick to wearing a look like this is starting off with a smooth canvas, so Deenihan first prepped the lips with a scrub and lip balm, which she blotted off. Then, in order to create a base, the pro applied loose translucent powder all over the lips.
To create the dark look, Deenihan lined the lips with a matte burgundy lip liner (she used Avon True Color Glimmersticks Lip Liner in Perfect Plum), filling in the corners of the lips as well. Then, she filled in the lips with a slightly lighter matte lipstick, Avon True Color Perfectly Matte Lipstick in Superb Wine, blending the two shades together. To achieve a precise application, Deenihan used a lip brush, which is ideal for deep shades.
To finish the look, Deenihan layered the same burgundy lip liner on top of the lipstick, creating an even vampier look. She then created a matte finish with a few dabs of translucent powder, which also locks the formula in place.
