Talk about a natural beauty! Mindy Kaling hit the red carpet earlier this week with a gorgeous fresh-faced makeup look to pair with her floral-print Dolce & Gabbana dress, and we’ve been dying to learn more about the actress’ beauty change of pace.

So we caught up with the star’s makeup artist of seven years, Carola Gonzalez, to break down Kaling’s “fresh and summery” beauty moment.

“[Mindy] normally lets me do whatever I want,” Gonzalez tells PeopleStyle. “I’ve been working with her for a long time, so I’ve earned her trust.”

The makeup pro added that for this look in particular, she was immediately inspired by the vibrant pops of color in Kaling’s printed dress, and wanted the star’s makeup to complement the design rather than compete with it.

“When creating a makeup look, I look at all the elements, dress, hair, shoes and accessories,” she says. “In this case, I felt the dress had a lot going on with the red flowers and golden accents, so I decided to make Mindy’s look more natural and soft. I wanted her to look fresh, and accentuate her natural beauty.”

So every aspect of the actress’ look — down to her rosy lip look — was kept soft.

And speaking of the star’s pout, Gonzalez applied Neutrogena Moisture Smooth Color Stick in Bright Berry to the actress’ lips to add moisture while also creating a slight lacquer-like appearance.

“[The Neutrogena stick] is super hydrating, has coverage and gives the lips the exact amount of sheen without making them too shiny,” says the makeup pro. “It’s a great shade for the summer.”

And as for the star’s glow, Gonzalez says she used Kevyn Aucoin’s The Neo Bronzer in Capri, a bronzer-and-blush-hybrid palette. “It’s very illuminating, can be used as a blush, and adds the perfect radiance to the skin,” she says.

But, she shares, the key to fighting summer shine and sweat is to prevent it completely.

“I always prep the skin with either a moisturizer or an oil-absorbing lotion because it helps to tone down the oil on skin and helps against the shine,” she tells PeopleStyle, adding that once she’s done, she then sets it with a pressed powder to seal the look into place.
