Look of the Week: Krysten Ritter's 'Girlie Goth' Makeup Moment at the Costume Designers Guild Awards

Find out how to get the star's beauty look -- straight from her makeup artist!

We’re constantly updating our Last Night’s Look gallery with all the best red-carpet moments (gorgeous dresses! dazzling accessories! sky-high heels!). Now, let’s talk beauty. Each week, we’ll be highlighting one of the most gorgeous makeup and/or hair moments, along with details on how to recreate the look — straight from the makeup artist or hairstylist — in our feature, Look of the Week.

For the Costume Designers Guild Awards, Jessica Jones actress Krysten Ritter stepped out on the red carpet wearing one of the most beautiful gowns we’ve ever seen on her: an ethereal floral embroidered Lela Rose design. And while we were initially enamored by the dress, we couldn’t help but obsess over her beauty look (that lipstick! that liner! those lashes), which is why reached out to the star’s makeup artist, Amy Nadine, who’s worked with Ritter since 2009, for all the details surrounding the bold makeup moment.

The “girlie goth” look, as Nadine calls it, was initially inspired by the actress’s dress, but the makeup pro decided to complement the design with a deeper makeup look, featuring a “strong goth lip and ‘I-don’t-care hair,'” to balance it out.

“We had to edge up the look and anchor it with a strong color, otherwise she would have floated away into princess world,” Nadine tells PeopleStyle. “It’s the most glam way to go ‘goth’ without looking dead. Meaning, it has enough life and warmth to it.”

For the actress’ lip color, Nadine says picking the perfect wine-colored shade was a trial and error process before falling in love with the blackcurrant hue by Charlotte Tilbury’s cosmetics collection.

“First we started with a classic lipstick formula in the same shade, but it was too satin-y and creamy, and even though I was her date for the evening, I was worried that it would be too high maintenance,” Nadine confesses. “The last thing I want my client to worry about when she’s out is her lipstick traveling and the shade made it too unforgiving! So we blotted it off and went with the matte formula.”

Once the shade was determined, Nadine lined the perimeter of Ritter’s lips with Kevyn Aucoin The Flesh Tone Lip Liner in Bloodroses to “contain the lipstick from moving a millimeter,” and then filled in the rest of the lip with Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick in Glastonberry.

As for the eyes, Nadine wanted the the focal point of the look to be Ritter’s luscious lashes (because the makeup pro loves playing up [Ritter’s] “big doe eyes”), so after applying the Mineral shade from her own Amy Nadine Renewing Nudes Palette to the star’s eyelids, Nadine lined Ritter’s upper lash line with M.A.C Cosmetics Fluidline Gel Liner in Blacktrack, creating a thicker line on the outer corners of her eyes to make the eyes appear more almond-shaped.

Next up? Lashes, which Ritter likes to do herself, says Nadine. “Krysten pinched her lashes with M.A.C Cosmetics’s Lash Curler and applied a couple coats of Tarte’s Gifted Amazonian Clay Smart Mascara.” And after a few Ardell Individual Flare Lashes in Medium were applied to the full upper lash line and to the outer corners, the look was complete!

So what did Ritter think of the final look? “She loved it! When we went to the ladies’ room and tried to take a selfie together,” she says, laughing, “[Ritter] told me she was so happy with the hair, the dress and the makeup. It’s the best feeling in the world.”
