Look of the Week: Julianne Hough's Shimmery Smoky Eye
Get all the details on the star's glam moment -- straight from her makeup artist!
We’re constantly updating our Last Night’s Look gallery with all the best red-carpet moments (gorgeous dresses! dazzling accessories! sky-high heels!). Now, let’s talk beauty. Each week, we’ll be highlighting one of the most gorgeous makeup and/or hair moments, along with details on how to recreate the look — straight from the makeup artist or hairstylist — in our feature, Look of the Week.
Now that Met Gala madness is officially behind us, it’s time to highlight a gorgeous can’t-miss makeup moment from earlier this week: Julianne Hough’s glowy skin and sultry smoky eye from an appearance of Fox & Friends in N.Y.C. We tapped the actress’ makeup artist (of nine years!) Spencer Barnes to break down the look.
Inspired by Hough’s feminine floral Monique Lhuillier dress, Barnes wanted the Dancing With the Stars host’s beauty look to complement the delicate design rather than compete with it.
“It was clear that the makeup could not overpower [the dress], nor could it be too soft, so I made choices to ensure definition and enhanced structure, but still chose colors in earthy neutrals to complement the airy, delicately printed fabrics of the dress,” Barnes tells PeopleStyle. “Also, I find that Julianne’s blue eyes pop the best when her eyes are a little smoky but not too matte (using warm earthy metallics), which added a compelling dimension with sheen and luster.”
Which is why the “effortless, chic, structured” look was all about the eyes (and the star’s luminous skin!).

“Julianne’s eyes and skin are the two things that help bring out her expressiveness, radiance and sunny personality best,” says Barnes. “Though I have been known to pop her mouth with a red, coral or bright pink on occasion.”
So to get the smoky eye look, Barnes began by applying Beauty by Piret Eye Silk in Seashell to the lid as a base and primer. He then layered Charlotte Tilbury Eyes To Mesmerise in Jean and Marie Antoinette shadows to create a shimmery depth and lined Hough’s top water line with Merle Norman Soft Touch Eye Pencil in Blackout for added depth and density.
Barnes finished the look with a nude lip, which he created by lining the star’s lips with Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Lip Liner in Pillowtalk and then filled in with two shades: Merle Norman Lip Pencil Plus in Guava on the outer edge of the lip for a shadowing effect and Merle Norman Lip Polish in Ladylike to the center of the lip for a fuller look.
As for the final look, Barnes says Hough was happy with the results (as she always is!).
“She was excited and happy with the look and buzzing with stories from her recent return from a much needed safari vacation with her fiancé Brooks to South Africa,” Barnes tells PeopleStyle. “She was definitely in a very centered, clear-headed and alive state. That’s why I call her my sunshine girl. Who wouldn’t want to be around that?”
