Look at that lip! When Orange Is the New Black and Tony-nominated The Color Purple star Danielle Brooks made her modeling debut earlier this week for the Christian Siriano x Lane Bryant fashion show in the a bold yellow gown from the collection, she didn’t stop the boldness there. She paired the look with an eye-popping fuchsia lip — a look so lovely she landed our coveted spot of Look of the Week.

M.A.C. Cosmetics senior makeup artist Regan Rabanal is the mastermind behind the pout, and we caught up with him to get all the deets.

“The dress was the inspiration,” Rabanal tells PeopleStyle. “And Danielle has such a beautiful bone structure and skin tone that I really wanted to highlight them using the warmer pinks on her lips and cheeks, which made her radiate against the bright yellow.”

He added that the Siriano’s love of a bright lip also helped lock in the decision to give the star a show-stopping statement pout. “Christian loves a fuchsia lip and I wanted to complement the collection by creating a fresh take on classic Hollywood glam,” says Rabanal.

While all models wore the pretty pink hue, Rabanal customized the shade just for Brooks. “This was the look created for each model in the show, and Danielle got her own special rendition,” he says. “Her lip is a special combo because I wanted to tailor it for her deeper skin tone.”

That’s why Rabanal created an ombré effect. He began by applying a wine-hued lip pencil (M.A.C Cosmetics Lip Pencil in Currant) around the perimeter of her lips for subtle definition and then — for the gradation — lined the inside of her lips with a slightly lighter-hued pencil (Chestnut).

To finish, the makeup pro applied Retro Matte Liquid Lip Color in To Matte With Love on the center of her lips, blending it out to meet the lip pencil.

As for Brooks’ cheeks, Rabanal opted to match the lip with a pink blush. The makeup pro used M.A.C Cosmetics Powder Blush in Dollymix “on the apples of the cheek for pop of color” for a matchy-matchy look.

So what did the star think of the final look? She loved it, Rabanal says. “Danielle was so excited to walk this show and was giddy in my chair all morning,” he says. “She said she ‘felt amazing!'”
