Liv Tyler on Turning Fashion Designer and What Kate Moss Taught Her
This is the actress' first-ever fashion line
“It’s been so fun and very different from anything I have done before,” the mom-of-three tells PEOPLE. “I was excited about creating great coats. Being a New Yorker, it’s so cold we all wear puffer coats, so I wanted to create a few looks like that with pieces like blouses, pants and boots that were super simple and classic.”
Known for their fashionable but functional outerwear worn by everyone from aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart in the ’20s to Benedict Cumberbatch in the most recent Sherlock Holmes adaption, it’s no surprise that Tyler’s 12-piece collection for Belstaff includes some seriously covetable coats such as a cropped leather jacket, a sumptuous cape and even a mom-friendly parka. “Fashion is amazing and fabulous but it doesn’t always work in your practical life — you need things that function and last and stand the test of time,” says Tyler.

While the new mom who gave birth to daughter Lula Rose on July 8 is more likely to be found wearing nightwear rather than daywear these days (“Lots of chic, beautiful cotton or silk pajamas,” she says) she’s excited to have a few stylish options up her sleeve in the coming months. “I’ve been pregnant for two years straight!” says Tyler, also mom to Sailor, 18 months and Milo, 11. “I just can’t wait to wear jeans again! Just to be able to throw on a pair of skinny jeans, a great flat, a beautiful sweater and coat and run out of the door.”
She’s the daughter of Steven Tyler and model Bebe Buell and counts Stella McCartney, the late designer Alexander McQueen and supermodel Kate Moss as close friends, so it’s no surprise that Tyler has been drawn to fashion. “The people that influenced me the most as a kid were my mother, my grandmother, my girlfriends Lucie de la Falaise and Kate Moss. Those were people I learned the basics from, like how to put a good red lip on!”
The Liv Tyler X Belstaff Winter 2016 collection launched on Aug. 1 while Spring 2017 will debut at London Fashion Week next month, hitting stores next February. “The next collection is a little bit more playful and more feminine,” says Tyler.
