Lena Dunham: ‘I’ve Always Wanted to Inspire a Hoagie Sandwich, But a Bag Is So Much Better'
The Girls star talks about inspiring a dino bag for Coach
Lena Dunham is an inspiration to the fashion brand Coach.
Indeed, the label and its creative director, Stuart Vevers, chose the Girls actress and series creator as one of its muses for its limited-edition 75th Anniversary bag collection and auction, which benefits the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The black bucket bag inspired by her is one of 48 bags featured in the auction, and the first $50,000 in sales will be donated to the department, which works to “ensure the preservation of fashion history and advance fashion as a form of art.”
“I have always been an admirer of Stuart’s aesthetic, and I am so honored to be part of Coach’s global auction benefitting The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art,” Dunham tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I’ve always wanted to inspire a hoagie sandwich, but a bag is so much better.”
The bag inspired by Dunham features a prehistoric twist: There are two pearl, leather and beaded versions of Coach’s mascot Rexy the Coach Dinosaur embroidered onto the front, as well as Rexy-inspired skeletal dinosaur bag charms (below). As an extra bonus, Dunham signed the hangtag, too.
While there is only one of these available in the auction, the other 47 are equally enticing. The remaining pieces include bags inspired by other stars such as Chloe Grace Moretz, the brand’s ambassador, Kate Bosworth, Zoe Kravitz and Debbie Harry (below), as well as unique takes on the brands classic silhouettes, like the Saddle, which was originally released in 1972.
