The star got some help preparing from a surprising place

Lauren Conrad is somewhat of a pro when it comes to modeling — after countless red carpets and years of posing in ad campaigns for her own clothing collections, she’d have to be. But a full-on fashion show was new, even for her. Luckily, her time on The Hills prepped her in a surprising way.

“I have an understanding that it’s just complete madness behind the scenes,” the Hills alum told PEOPLE of her Teen Vogue internship days preparing her for the chaos of a runway show. “I’m not really fazed. I’m not surprised when [a model] was being sewn into the dress when she was trying to walk out.”

That doesn’t mean she didn’t have some newbie jitters. “I’m new. This is my first time,” the designer said after the show. “I don’t think anything prepares you for when it’s your own show.Just dealing with nerves It’s just been, like, a nuts week. We’ve been working from morning to night. We did all the things to prepare, and you just gotta show up and just hope it goes well and enjoy it.”

All smiles, it was clear Conrad did just that. “I didn’t really get to watch it [because] I was backstage, but I feel pretty good about it,” the 29-year-old said. And her celeb friends sitting front row (including Laguna Beach pals Lo Bosworth and Dieter Schmitz, husband William Tell and fashionistas Dylan Penn, Ashley Tisdale and Chrissy Teigen) seemed to have just as much fun as she did. Teigen even was ready to nab a piece (the floor-length cardigan) for herself: “Whenever I buy something I think, ‘Can I wear this to the airport?'” Teigen tells PEOPLE. “And that one I was like, ‘Oh, that’s gonna look so good at the airport.’ So chic and put-together.”

Of course, Conrad gets first dibs on the collection (even wearing it on the runway herself), and she’s got her eye on a few faves. “I really love the jacket only because I feel like it’s so much fun to incorporate into an everyday look,” she said. “And also, there’s a dress that has navy velvet that goes into tulle, I had them make me a version of that too. I really like that.”

Not that she’ll be dressed to the nines every day — even a fashion designer has to have a sweatpants day once in a while. “It’s sort of like the side that I wish I could be,” Conrad says of how the collection reflects her style. “Every day, I wish I could be that person that puts on heels and a really cute outfit. So, it’s an aspirational side.”

So does the star get to take a break now that she’s put on a major undertaking like a runway show? Well, first she’s got to get her next (top-secret) Disney collection for Kohl’s out the door. “I’m obsessed with Disney movies, so when we get to pick a new one, I’m like ‘Yes!'” she says. “They let me pick — I mean they definitely have input but I’m like ‘Please!'”

Then she finally gets that wine and relaxation she’s earned after her big year when she celebrates her one-year anniversary with Tell. “We’re gonna take a little trip to celebrate,” Conrad said. Don’t call it a babymoon, though: “I’m just focusing on this right now,” she says of any plans to expand her family — which means we’ll have to wait impatiently for a collection of Conrad baby clothes.
