Lady Gaga Gets Matching 'Joanne' Tattoo with Her Father
They pay respect to their late family member with new ink
When Lady Gaga gets a tattoo, it always has a special meaning. She had a David Bowie tattoo inked after her tribute performance to the late singer at the Grammys. She got matching “unity” tattoos with sexual assault survivors from her Oscars performance. Now, Gaga and her father, Joe Germanotta, are honoring the subject of her latest album, Joanne, with matching ink.
The singer’s new LP is named after Gaga’s aunt (Germanotta’s late sister), Joanne, who died at age 19 of lupus complications after suffering emotional trauma from a sexual assault.
“Got Joanne tattooed on my arm in her actual signature,” Gaga explained in an Instagram post showing off her new addition. “My dad got one too. With an angel on his shoulder.”

On Monday she revealed on The Howard Stern Show that she also has an angel tattoo on her skull, calling her late aunt her “guardian angel or spirit guide.”
“She’s like this goddess who we worshiped in our family our whole lives,” Gaga explained. “Her picture was always up, and it was framed so beautifully in the house. We talked about her all the time, every family meal.”
She also dedicated a song to her aunt, but Gaga says she feels her spirit more now that she’s performing the album than she did while writing it. “I feel that I’m channeling her more now because I’m finished with the record and I can feel her spirit and the excitement of her message coming through the album.”
Gaga is currently kicking off her album debut with a dive bar tour across the country.
