Kylie Jenner Feels Your Pain About Those Sold-Out Lip Kits: She Invented Them Because Her Fave Lipstick Kept Selling Out
When Kylie Jenner originally launched her lip kits, we assumed she was magnanimously trying to bestow the secrets to her plush pout upon the masses. But as it turns out, the main purpose behind her constantly sold-out line of products was so that she wouldn’t have to worry about her favorite products (drumroll…) selling out.
“Long before I got my lips done, I was really obsessed with lipstick,” the 18-year-old reality star explains in a new post on her website. “I was always trying to make my lips look bigger, but I didn’t want people to know I was actually wearing lipstick.”
Enter the “overlining” trend, in which makeup artists and Jenner aficionados alike use lip liner to subtly trace just outside the line of their lips, creating a plumped-up illusion.
“I started overlining my lips to see if I liked the look of them bigger,” she explains. “When I got my lips done, I got even more obsessed. At the time, my favorite color was M.A.C Whirl. I was really into it, but once everyone figured out what I was wearing, it would sell out.”

So in a turn of events we’d describe as ironic, Jenner fulfilled her need for her favorite shade by creating an entire line of products that would be pretty much impossible to obtain.
“And that’s how the Kylie Lip Kit came about,” she says. “I never imagined it would become what it has! In the beginning, I didn’t care because I was doing it for me, but it’s amazing how successful it is now.”
