Kim Kardashian Seen Without Wedding Band on Instagram as Divorce from Kanye West Looms
When PEOPLE reported that Kardashian, 40, and West, 43, had been living "separate lives" in mid-December, the KKW Beauty mogul was spending more quality time with close friends and family — without her rings on.
Kardashian snapped a selfie cuddling up beside BFF La La Anthony on Dec. 17 where she held her left hand up to her cheek, visibly showing her bare ring finger. "Sleepovers with your bestie are a must! @lala," she captioned the photo.
When the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star shared some photos from her family's intimate Christmas Eve gathering, she also appeared to be seen without her engagement ring or wedding band on her left hand.
Most recently, just hours before sources confirmed the news of her divorce preparations to PEOPLE, Kardashian kept her rings off when she posed on the floor of her closet to model new her SKIMS Body Basics line. The photo has since been deleted from Kardashian's Instagram page.
Though the timing of Kardashian's ring-free Instagram moments could be a result of her marriage troubles, the star has been known to show less bling on social media ever since she was robbed of $10 million worth of jewelry at gunpoint in Paris in Oct. 2016.
Multiple sources confirmed to PEOPLE on Jan. 5 that West, who wed Kardashian in May 2014, knows that the star is preparing to file divorce papers. "He knows that she's done. She has had enough, and she told him that she wants some space to figure out her future," a source told PEOPLE, adding that West is bracing for a filing but doesn't know when it will take place.
"He's okay. He's sad, but okay. He knows the inevitable will happen, and he knows that it's coming soon," the source added.
Reps for Kardashian and West did not respond to PEOPLE's requests for comment.
Other sources tell PEOPLE that the couple has been in marriage counseling trying to salvage their relationship. "Kim and Kanye are in counseling and exploring their options," the insider said. "They have been working on their marriage for a long time, but no decision has been made."
Kardashian, who is working with top divorce lawyer Laura Wasser, has turned to her family for support during the tumultuous time. "Kris Jenner and Kim's sisters are being as supportive as possible. They've seen Kim struggle over the last year and ultimately just want both her and Kanye to be happy, however that may look," a second source said.
Their marital troubles come months after they weathered a tumultuous summer, with West's unsuccessful presidential bid, rumors of divorce and more public drama. While campaigning in July, West divulged deeply personal details about his family and marriage during rallies and on Twitter. Sources told PEOPLE at the time that West's campaign came amid a new cycle in his bipolar disorder. While they reunited in Los Angeles to spend time with their children at the end of the summer, another series of tweets from West appeared to land their marriage in trouble.
"It's the same thing over and over and over again," a source told PEOPLE at the time. "He's on very thin ice with her right now, and she's truly trying to decide what to do to protect the kids, but also her own sanity. The whole thing is discouraging and difficult for her."
