Where did that come from?

There was so much to talk about when Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West hit the red carpet at the MTV VMAs Sunday night. There was her remarkably low-key dress, her natural makeup and undone, damp hair; there was his “famous” T-shirt and white sneakers; there was her perfectly polished mani. (It’s Essie Gel Couture in Sheer Fantasy, thanks for asking.)

And then — record scratch — was that an enormous new rock she was flaunting on her left ring finger? Yep, a source says: “Kanye surprised her with a new ring. Kim couldn’t believe it. It’s even more stunning than her engagement ring if that’s possible.”

To the untrained eye, it might appear that Kardashian is wearing the 15-carat Lorraine Schwartz stunner that Kanye West famously proposed with at San Francisco’s AT&T Stadium. And there’s no doubt, it occupies a similar amount of real estate on her finger and has a similar vibe (the vibe being, absurdly large).

But a closer examination reveals that her VMAs bling is slightly different from her engagement ring in a few key aspects. Most notably, the cut is different; whereas her engagement ring is a 15-carat cushion cut set onto a thin pavé band, Lorraine Schwartz confirms that this is a 20-carat emerald cut “excellent, perfect” stone set on another thin (and what appears to be French pavé) band.

A source tells People that this new ring is a gift from her doting husband, who also bestowed upon her the gift of calling her a “G” during his wide-ranging VMAs speech. It’s not the million-dollar push present she requested, but we bet she’s not complaining.

What do you think of her new bling?
