Katy Perry
is bringing back the ’90s!

At Monday night’s Met Gala, the singer wore a custom Prada gown featuring numerous charms and gadgets … most notably a Tamagotchi pet. Yes, you read that right — Perry accessorized her ensemble with the popular retro toy.

Admitting that it was difficult to choose a dress to top all the ones she’s worn to the past Galas, the 31-year-old dished to PEOPLE at her KatyXCovergirl event on Sunday night about her plans for tonight’s look.

“I’ve had two Tamagotchis located in Connecticut and I just feel a little like…like I’m in tech but I’m not playing your game. But I’ve been keeping these bitches alive since ’96,” Perry joked, asking if anyone caught her reference.

Perry’s boyfriend Orland Bloom also wore a matching Tamagotchi.

In the make-up department, the singer went for a toned down eye, wearing a nude on her lids, as she turned up the drama with blue eyeliner and mascara, finishing off the look with black “Perry Panther” lipstick, all from her new Katy Kat CoverGirl collection. Opting for a modern take on a classic updo, Perry wore a stiff beehive, created with Oscar Blandi hair care, which her hair stylist, Chris Appleton, described to PEOPLE as “iconic hairdo.”

“The beehive needed to look sharp and futuristic,” he said. “Katy’s dress is incredible and we wanted her hair to complement and ties in with the overall look without competing with it.”
