Kate Mara’s gone short before, but she’s never gone short before. But last night, at an event where she was being honored as the “Face of the Future,” Mara debuted her haircut of the future as well.

The actress was already the center of attention at the Max Mara Women in Film event for a number of reasons — she was there to receive the brand’s honor, she was wearing a red jumpsuit by the brand — but number one for us was her super-short new haircut. The actress, most recently seen sporting a muted auburn shade that faded into the blonde tips of her short bob, not only chopped off several inches of hair, but amped up her shade as well.

Mara’s hairstylist, Mara Roszak, posted an after shot of the cut — a longer-in-front, piecey-in-the-back pixie, showing her client already clad in her outfit for the evening, proving just how last-minute the makeover was.

While we wait for the scoop on the new do, we can look to Mara’s past makeovers for clues. When she went from cinnamon to platinum and chopped her locks off last year, Mara told PEOPLE, “I was just ready to not be — this sounds really cheesy — but I didn’t want to be defined by my hair color. My hair has always been crazy long and I was just ready to let that go.”

And frankly, we’re most curious as to what Leonardo DiCaprio reference she’ll inspire this time around.
