Since way before their superstar status made them household names, Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas have been best friends. And that means the exes are totally allowed to poke fun at each other, which is just what they did when we caught up with them Thursday night at a private concert in L.A. for Marriott reward members.

Before they hit the stage, Lovato, 24, and Jonas, 27, confessed to PeopleStyle that while they’ve stayed true to themselves, they’ve experimented with many different hairstyles over the years.

“[There was] a lot of hair change,” says Lovato. “A lot of colors, too,” adds Jonas.

But Jonas’ most memorable tress change? His straightened Camp Rock style, which he says he created daily with a trusty tool.

“Oh yeah, flat ironing,” he says. “That was my favorite hair.”

But despite the many strand switch-ups over the years, the DNCE frontman says working and performing alongside his BFF is, hands down, one of the best aspects of his job.

“It’s nice that in this crazy industry we have friends like this — it’s genuine,” Jonas says. “It’s not like red carpet friends where you hug them and never talk to them again.”

He adds: “We actually get to spend time together, and it makes shows like this a lot of fun. When you get matched up with other artists it can be a quick one song on stage, but for this we get to be collaborative and come up with fun ideas for this crowd.”
