Jessica Biel's Hairstylist Says Her New Bangs Were Inspired by French Women
The actress debuted the new do on Instagram
Ah, fall. The time of year when sweaters, booties and leather jackets are considered uniform. But another major trend we’re seeing this season? Fringe! Bangs, that is. And the latest star to sport the style? Jessica Biel, who just revealed a fresh, fun new set on social media.
Celebrity hairstylist Adir Abergel was the mastermind behind the star’s seasonal chop, leaving Biel with a set of French-inspired piecey, eye-skimming bangs to pair with her long, straight strands.
“Jess called me and she was like, ‘Hey, I think I’m ready for something new,'” Abergel tells PeopleStyle of the star’s new style. “[The bangs] are also for a project that she’s working on, so it was a great collaboration.”
As for the inspiration? Biel’s mane man says the two skimmed through photos of Charlotte Gainsbourg (as well as everyone from “her mom to her sister”) for the perfect French fringe inspo.
“[Biel’s bangs] aren’t too heavy, but they’re heavy enough that they’re not wispy. They are just right above the above the eyebrow, so you can still see it,” Abergel says. “Not that other bang that I used to give her, which was way heavier, more fashion-y, way more of a blanket. This was definitely about bringing [out] her earthy, feminine side. It was fun and exciting.”

Once the star’s bangs were chopped, Abergel says her new do needed some training.
“Bangs are interesting because when you’ve been parting your hair in the middle for such a long time, it really does take a while to re-train them,” he tells PeopleStyle. “Even after I was done, they were wanting to split in the middle! So I was teaching her how to use gel on it for the first week to re-train it.”
Abergel’s top tip? Comb them with a gel-covered toothbrush! “It’s not about putting gel everywhere, it’s about really anchoring those roots and teaching them ‘No no no, you’re going to go in the direction I want you to go in!'”
And after the fringe was fixed, colorist Tracey Cunningham got to work, giving the actress minimal highlights with darker depth.
“I gave her a fresh, new feeling for fall,” Cunningham tells PeopleStyle. “We just needed to give her not as many highlights. Jessica looks sensational slightly darker — it accentuates her high cheekbones.”
The pro added that this look is reminiscent of hues she’s used on Biel before: “I don’t make a lot of drastic changes on Jessica,” she says. “She’s such a classic beauty and so easy going — we know what’s right for her and stick with it.”
