With a skincare, makeup and now haircare line under her belt, Jessica Alba has officially reached total beauty domination. But, according to the Honest Beauty founder, she wasn’t always a self-proclaimed expert.

In a recent interview with Allure, Alba, 35, opened up about her past beauty faux pas, which included a time in her life when she was a bit heavy-handed in her makeup application.

“I actually wore too much makeup when I was a teenager,” she confessed. “I wore a full face and I probably [should have] worn a lot less.”

Her reasoning? She didn’t catch on to the minimal makeup trend until later in life: “I didn’t know that there was the no-makeup makeup look until I was in my 20s. I used to use a foundation stick and just rub it all over my face and then I would break out. Then, I would wear more makeup to cover the break out. The most important foundation is great skin.”

Now, the actress follows a less-in-more approach to makeup, and often shares her own tips and tricks via easy-to-follow mini tutorials on her social media accounts.

In the same interview, Alba also shared that she wished someone would have warned her about the dangers of tanning beds when she was younger.

“I did [use tanning beds] a little bit as a teenager and a young adult,” she said. “I remember, it was a trend and we all used to do it. You put the sticker on to see how dark you got. I would go to my cousins’ dances, like the Sadie Hawkins dance, and we would get a fake tan before. I would never do a tanning bed ever [now].”

And though she has some other very relatable beauty regrets — including overplucked brows and the overtanned hands — there’s one that might surprise you: She might have thought twice about some of her tattoos!

“You’re never going to be in the same place emotionally and mentally at 18 that you are at 20 or 25 or 30. Something that’s meaningful to you when you’re younger is not going to be meaningful to you five years later,” she confessed. “I have a few tattoos. I’m not into them now the way that I was.”
