Jesse Plemons is full of surprises. Whether it’s saving a damsel in distress from a sexual predator on Friday Night Lights, cooking meth on Breaking Bad or turning a bad guy into literal hamburger meat on Fargo. But Plemons has clearly been saving his biggest surprise for last, attending the 2016 Emmys red carpet sporting a very intriguing partial mustache. And there’s really only one way to sum up our feelings on this new facial hair development — We’re concerned.

The Emmy-nominated actor arrived on the awards show red carpet looking every inch the leading man in a traditional black tuxedo and bow tie, save for one very distinct, very bold decision taking place on his upper lip.

It appears that Plemons is taking a page out of Michael Jordan’s early nineties playbook, opting for a barely-there upper lip covering with most of the hair focused around his cupid’s bow, fading into a sheer ginger haze as it approaches the outer edges of his mouth.

To be fair, it’s been a minute since the last time we saw the actor at an event, so perhaps this ‘stache is simply part of a new role he’s playing, or the result of some kind of terrible fire-related accident. There is one piece of good news, however, at least his facial hair game can only go up from here.
