Find out why hyaluronic acid-based products are the key to your best summer skin
Changing your skincare routine for the season is just as important as changing your wardrobe. And with summer quickly approaching, it’s time to put your heavyweight creams aside and opt for lighter, gel-like formulas — even if your skin is usually dry.
“In the summer you want more breathability,” N.Y.C. cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Shereene Idriss told PeopleStyle. “You want your skin to be able to breathe through the heat and moisture to avoid the clogging of pores and potential breakouts.”
If you’re wondering how such lightweight formulas pack the same punch as your thick winter cream, it’s thanks to one superstar ingredient blowing up the beauty market: hyaluronic acid, or its derivative, sodium hyaluronate, which is found in all of our favorite summer skincare picks.

“It’s a powerful hydrator, yet it’s lightweight and absorbs quickly into the skin, making it ideal for summer,” Dr. Idriss told us. Plus, it’s great for all skin types, whether you get excessively oily or dry.
Even if you have the oiliest of skin — especially during the summer months — Dr. Idriss warns not to just cut out hydrating your skin cold turkey. “I think 100 percent of people overlook the fact that oiliness indicates that their skin is really dehydrated,” she said.
Beauty companies have started to catch on to the science behind hyaluronic acid, and formulated products of every kind to incorporate into your routine as the temperatures rise. Besides looking particularly pretty in their cool blue packaging, these new products feel instantly cooling on the face (a bonus in the heat!) and provide intense hydration without leaving behind a greasy finish.
