Short hair, don’t care … Hozier?

The handsome Irish singer, whose hit “Take Me to Church” is currently all over the radio and was recently nominated for a Grammy for Song of the Year, is known for his luscious curly locks and perfect man-buns, but a few years ago he sported much shorter locks — and actually looked totally different.

Check out the 24-year-old folk singer with much shorter hair:

Barry McCall

Still super cute, but we prefer him with his musician’s scruff and scragglier hair — it just goes better with his bluesy, rootsy sound. (At one point when he was younger, producers wanted to actually turn him into a pop singer. But “I wasn’t comfortable with it,” he tells PEOPLE.)

Hozier, who’s currently on a sold-out U.S. tour, also recently told PEOPLE that while his newfound fame is completely surreal, it’s also been amazing. “Fame is a funny word and a funny concept, but it’s exciting and energizing,” he says. “This is a dream. It’s part of everything I want to do with my life. I’ve just now learned to get my head around what’s happening, and enjoy it.”

For more from the musician, pick up this week’s PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday, and tell us: Which way do you prefer his hair?
