How to Wear a Half-Up Bun, A.K.A, the Hun: 3 Styles from Kardashian to Casual
The hot hair trend for spring worn three different ways
For the majority of us glam squad-less non-celebrities, simply fashioning our hair into something resembling a style before rushing out the door is enough of a challenge without trying to replicate any of those more advanced red carpet styles that always seem to involve 20 tiny interlocking braids. But thankfully, as the summer months approach, there’s been a new wave of much more laid-back, effortless styles among celebs that you can easily replicate at home. And if you need inspiration, look no further than these 3 stars rocking a half-up bun, also affectionately referred to as the “hun,” ranging from Kim Kardashian‘s expertly crafted ski slope style to Vanessa Hudgen‘s SoCal surfer chic.
Ok, so obviously Kim didn’t create this new take on the topknot all on her lonesome, given that 1. This shot appeared on her makeup artist Ariel Tejada’s Instagram account with a hair shoutout to Mane Addicts’ Justine Marjan, and 2. Kim probably hasn’t done so much as put her own hair in a ponytail since 2005. Yet nonetheless, whether you have a team of beauty pros to back you up or not, the effortlessness of this style seems totally achievable, even down to artfully deconstructed bun bits.

Clearly, Kim’s off-duty ski look also inspired her sister Khloé who rocked a very similar style on Snapchat on Wednesday. The Strong Looks Better Naked author pulled half her hair up into a nearly identical bun, bringing a little more hair into the mix, but still leaving enough strands hanging down that we can refer to this as a half-up style. Khloé also added a little more flair up top, giving her look more of a cockatoo vibe to Kim’s sea anemone twist.
But leave it to the founder and Editor-in-Chief of Astral & Opal to show us the perfect way to give this ’90s-inspired do a bohemian flair. Vanessa Hudgens showed off her new extra-long, Coachella-ready extensions in Los Angeles on Wednesday, tying her loose waves back into a casual half-up bun with plenty of wispy pieces pulled out. She paired the messy do with a denim Forever 21 romper and circle sunnies to get just the right dose of the Janis Joplin aesthetic.
What do you think of these hairstyles? Will you be trying it? Which is your favorite?
