How It's Done: Elizabeth Olsen's Half-Up Topknot
If you haven’t yet gotten in on the half-up bun trend (we have so hard we’re affectionately calling it the “hun”), it’s time to stop resisting. According to Dove celebrity hairstylist Mark Townsend (yes, the guy responsible for starting the trend on Ashley Olsen at the 2015 Met Gala), it’s here to stay — especially during the summer months.
So after falling in love with the his most recent version of the look that he created on Elizabeth Olsen, we had to have him teach us his ways in our “How It’s Done” video series.
After waving the hair, Townsend starts off with a healthy dose of Dove‘s dry shampoo all over, which he says adds a bit of grip and texture to the strands. Then, he pulls the top section of hair up into a half-up ponytail, leaving a front piece out on each side. He then braids the pony, twists it into a bun, and pins it in place before wrapping the two loose strands around the topknot and securing them with bobby pins.
But the key to making this look red carpet worthy, he says, is all in the cleanup. Townsend sprays a tiny bit of hairspray on a boar bristle toothbrush to gently comb back any rogue strands around the hairline.
