The Frances Ha star (and Golden Globe nominee) intends to pull out all the stops

Greta Gerwig’s Golden Globe nomination for her role in the film Frances Ha has garnered her enough attention to cement her status as this year’s indie darling. But she’s not content to stop there: She’s also hoping to earn a spot on the “best dressed” lists.

“I think I really want to go for it,” Gerwig told PEOPLE of pulling out all the stops now that she’s a nominee. “I don’t want to be too cool for school … How many times are you allowed to wear a gown and nobody says, ‘Why is she wearing that gown?! It’s a Tuesday, and she’s standing on 14th St. and 3rd Ave. This is weird!'”

But since she’s still a newbie when it comes to über-glam red carpet events, Gerwig has selected a knockout awards show fashion muse for herself. “I want to go a little bit more Sofia Vergara, if she were an awkward German girl,” she tells PEOPLE, laughing. “Every time I see her I’m like, ‘That’s the way to do it! Don’t hide, just go for it!’ and I try to emulate that. Sometimes it doesn’t work, but whatever!”

And we’re assuming she’s communicated that to her stylist, Erin Walsh, who also happens to work with the always impeccable Kerry Washington. “[Erin] helps guide me. Sometimes I’ll do that thing where I’m like, ‘Oh, I want to wear the weirdest dress on the rack!’,” Gerwig admits. “She’s like, ‘Greta … it’s just going to make you look weird.’ Sometimes I do it anyway, and she’s like, ‘Seriously, what did I just tell you!'”
