After John Mayer saw his shaggy hair on the Grammy Awards telecast, he knew he needed a trim ASAP
When John Mayer saw photos of himself from the Grammys hitting the internet after presenting the song of the year award to Childish Gambino, he took note of his look and realized something was off. So the musician got an impromptu haircut.
Thankfully, Mayer, 41, had plenty of time before the afterparties to fix his dilemma, because as he explained on an Instagram Live, “there’s something in between the show and the afterparty, and it’s called waiting around doing nothing.”
Instead, the singer-songwriter decided to freshen up his look by trimming his long, shaggy ends while he waited to head to his label’s post-Grammys reception in Los Angeles.
“You might be aware that I’ve got my hair cut in between — since I last saw you in between the Grammys and now,” Mayer told his fans during the Instagram Live. “I got my hair cut because I looked back at a picture from the Grammys and I said, ‘That won’t do. I need another haircut.’ Shout out to my barber Nick [Flores of Sally Hershberger Salon], who came to my house.”

He called the moment “the baller-ist thing I’ve ever done.”
Mayer continued, “I used the Grammy Awards telecast as a mirror.” Then, referring to himself in the third person, the star added, “He used a Grammy Awards show as a mirror. He checked his hair in the Grammy Awards. And then he got his hair cut. Top that.”
The singer’s continuously shared many of his beauty secrets and routines with his fans on social media, and quickly became one of the biggest gurus around.
“I don’t smoke and I don’t drink anymore and I don’t go out in the sun and I don’t eat and I don’t love anybody,” he explained of his quest to smooth skin.

Prior to presenting, Mayer joined longtime pal Alicia Keys on stage to discuss his own song of the year award for “Daughters” back in 2004 — and why he gave half to Keys.
“I wanted to share with you a little story. I have been super blessed to win 15 Grammys. Pretty cool, pretty cool,” Keys explained. “In 2004 I dreamed about winning song of the year for ‘If I Ain’t Got You.’ So, when my hero, Stevie Wonder, opened up that card and started to read in braille, I just knew he was going to feel my name.”
Instead, the award went to Mayer.
“But don’t worry, it’s okay! This story has a really happy ending,” Keys said, holding half a Grammy aloft. “Because John said, ‘I agree, Alicia, this should have been yours’ and he literally broke the Grammy and wrote ‘If I Ain’t Got You’ with my name on it and gave it to me.”
Mayer then strolled onstage with the other half of the gramophone.
“This has got to be the coolest joint custody agreement in showbiz history,” Mayer joked.
Keys said, “We’re putting it back together — it belongs back together.” “Just for one night only,” Mayer added.
