From the teaser trailer released Monday (and from, oh, everything Baz Luhrmann’s ever done), we could tell that the collaboration between Chanel, the new face of the brands No. 5 fragrance (Gisele Bündchen) and the famed director was going to be glossy, gorgeous and dramatic. And in the full-length ad, released today, it delivered all that and more (“more” being a whole lot of Chanel-branded eye candy).

The supermodel tells PEOPLE that she really enjoyed the opportunity to get out of her comfort zone for the ad, which features her riding a surfboard, seeming distressed and even shedding a tear as she drives through N.Y.C. “I felt the whole experience was memorable to me — it is hard to pick one [favorite] part,” she says. “To have the opportunity to play a part like that and go through all those different emotions was really fun.”

Luhrmann and his wife, costume designer Catherine Martin, brought Chanel No. 5 to life again (their first ads for the brand starred Nicole Kidman in 2004) and they enjoyed the collaboration just as much the second time around. “When we were first asked if would we do a No. 5 commercial 10 years ago, I said, ‘Look, I can’t really do that very well. I don’t know how to do commercials. I haven’t done one before. What I probably could do, though, is some sort of a trailer of a movie that never got made,'” Luhrmann says. “It became very clear … that it wasn’t about focusing on a fragrance that is almost 100 years old. The journey was creating a character that Nicole would be perfectly suited to, who would represent the kind of woman who would wear that fragrance. The big thing for us is how is the Chanel woman, that we focused on 10 years ago, how is she different now, 10 years later?”

They devised a woman who has it all — from a romantic marriage (to Game of Thrones‘ Michael Huisman) to a sweet daughter to a fulfilling career as a top model (sound familiar?) — and still makes time for those romantic moments. Then they asked Bündchen to convey that all without words. “There is something extraordinary about Gisele because her body is her instrument. So she is naturally athletic, but the way that she can use clothes and her own body to express emotion or to make a picture is extraordinary,” Martin says. “She does bring something: this ability to create emotion within a picture, which is unexpected.”

For her part, Bündchen (who tells PEOPLE her last purchase was a black Chanel bag) loved stretching her limits. “He made me feel at ease and he and his team couldn’t be nicer,” she says. “We had a lot of fun together.” Watch the ad, below, and tell us what you think!
