Gigi Hadid is one of the most sought-after models at New York Fashion Week. And this year she’s not only wearing the clothes on the catwalk — she’s designing them too.
The model of the moment teamed up with Tommy Hilfiger (she’s a long-time muse of the brand) on her own collection of cozy knits, starry-print dresses, military-inspired jackets and sporty undergarments set to debut September 9th in a Carnival-themed show. (Get more details on the see-now-buy-now extravaganza here!) But you don’t have to wait until Friday to see the designs. We have an exclusive sneak peek of Hadid showing off her line in the video above.
“I feel like every girl wants to design clothes at some point, and it’s something I’ve become even more passionate about as my career has developed,” Hadid says of her partnership with Tommy Hilfiger. “This was a really nice way to start designing because I could trust in a team that I know is amazing. I could ‘get my feet wet’ creatively and focus on design; it was a really special experience.”
The 21-year-old catwalker says that working with the “ultimate American brand” was the perfect fit for her debut collection, which is “nautical and military-inspired.”
“A lot of our inspiration came from pieces that I’ve worn myself and that I’ve found at vintage stores,” she shared. “We wanted to make special, authentic designs that feel fresh and exciting but also timeless and classic — those are the pieces I am drawn to the most. We kept all of the fabrics and textures really true to our inspiration.”
Describing her personal style as “casual and chic,” Hadid says she tries to keep things simple while mixing in great accessories.
“I love statement pieces like great coats and great boots, and then pairing those stand-out pieces with simple jeans and a t-shirt,” she said.
Her style is also influenced by her friends, who she hopes buy (and wear!) her TommyxGigi clothes.
“I feel like there’s a piece in the collection for everyone; I designed it with so many of my friends, family and role models in min,” Hadid said. “I think people will have a lot of fun with the collection and especially the patches; we’ll see a lot of different ways that people are going wear it and that makes me really excited.”
