Everyone's doing denim with their Chanel
The word Chanel is synonymous with a chic Parisian sensibility — that certain “je ne sais quoi” that is supposedly the birthright of all French girls. It’s also synonymous with lots of bouclé suit jackets and low-heeled pumps. And this week at Cannes, it seemed to also be synonymous with acid-wash denim. Yeah, you read that right.

Naturally, the fashionable film festival on the French Riviera was a showcase for plenty of Chanel designs — in addition to brand ambassadors including Kristen Stewart, Vanessa Paradis and Lily-Rose Depp, the brand made an appearance on Blake Lively, Kirsten Dunst and Jessica Chastain, among others. And time and again, we couldn’t help but notice that the cool-girl way to wear Chanel (this week, anyway) is with your most low-key jeans or basic tee.
From left: Vanessa Paradis teamed her Chanel blazer and pussybow blouse with a pair of dark skinny jeans and pink heels; Chloë Sevigny topped a pair of teeny denim shorts with a blouse (featuring the brand’s logo at the necktie) and sweater from the brand; Kristen Stewart actually nabbed a white Chanel cropped tee to go with her pencil skirt by the line; Caroline de Maigret teamed her bag with acid-wash jeans and sneakers; and Lily-Rose Depp picked a pink tulle crop top to wear with her printed jeans (which are both made by Chanel).

And about that clutch Chloë is carrying: It’s also Chanel, made custom for her by the brand, as she told People in this exclusive video. It looks like an old-timey movie camera, complete with silver details and a sparkling “lens.” “This amazing purse was given to me by the kind people at Chanel,” she said. “They said they’re only giving them to the filmmakers this year … It fits basically nothing! ID, phone, hotel. It’s kitschy in Cannes!”
