Every ACM Outfit Change That Was Either a Little Bit Country or a Little Bit Rock 'n Roll

See all the most impressive costume changes from country music's big night

On Sunday night, country music honored its best and brightest at the Academy of Country Music Awards. And when a bunch of would-be cowboy and girl crooners get together, you better believe there’s a whole lot of glitz, glamour and (in some cases) sky-high bouffants hairsprayed to within a inch of their lives. After all, as they say, the higher the hair, the closer to God.

Carrie Underwood, with the help of her stylist Marina Toybina, kicked off the evening in a floor-skimming, fully-beaded Davidson Zanine illusion dress that was her signature mix of sexy and sophisticated. The pattern of the dress combined with beading gave it an Art Deco, flapper-inspired feel, while the hint of skin beneath and her sleek platinum lob kept the overall look very 21st-century. But for her performance, the singer channeled the Donny and Marie Osmond dichotomy, changing out her country-glam gown for a silver bondage-inspired Manuel Diaz chainmail mini paired with black, lace-up gladiator heels.

Miranda Lambert‘s three ensembles for the evening were all about the details. While her yellow Christian Siriano gown on the red carpet appeared to be all old Hollywood glamour, don’t let the ladylike pleats and plunging neckline distract you from her hot pink Joyce Echols heels finished off with a tiny gun holster. Likewise, her ensemble for the after party was a sophisticated black Kimora Lee Simmons jumpsuit that was given a subtle, sexy twist with a sheer center panel accented with sequin straps. Finally, her award ceremony look was a super casual black top and flared pants given a healthy dose of sparkle thanks to a rhinestone-laden matching belt and neck scarf.

Katy Perry has never met a fully themed ensemble she didn’t like. So of course, attending the ACM Awards dressed up as a full-blown cartoonish cowgirl was too great a temptation to pass up. For the evening, the pop star paired up with her favorite designer Jeremy Scott yet again for these two custom couture Western-themed looks. On the red carpet, Perry wore a blue lamé motorcycle jacket and fringed mini skirt with a pink crop top, oversized cowprint rhinestone belt, fishnets, and matching pink heeled cowboy boots. Her Dolly Parton duet look was equally festive, swapping out the matching set for a red and yellow fringed dress shirt, oversized star earrings, and yet another set of matching heeled cowboy boots.

But no matter how hard Katy Perry may try, there’s only one true queen of country, and that’s Dolly Parton. Never one to be outdone in the rhinestone department, Parton definitely did not disappoint at this year’s ACM Awards. For the red carpet, the country legend kept things classy in a white gown featuring a fluted, crystal-speckled skirt and a lace overlay top. But Parton majorly turned up the volume for her performance look, changing into a circus ring master-approved outfit composed of cream trousers and a technicolor rhinestone blazer-bustier combo complete with a faux collar and tiny sparkly neck tie. One thing’s for sure, Katy Perry’s got some huge, glittery 6-in. heels to fill if she’s looking to try and steal Dolly’s crystal-encrusted country crown.
