For Eva Mendes, evolving her eponymous clothing line with New York & Company is a family affair. The actress debuted her latest collection for the brand on Tuesday, and judging by the looks on the runway, she’s become very comfortable and confident in her role as a designer. And when she needs advice, she reaches out to the women in her life.

“My sisters are definitely my guinea pigs and then my mom always keeps me grounded,” Mendes told PeopleStyle at her show kicking off New York Fashion Wee. “I will be like, ‘Mom what do you think about this jacket for $79?’ And she’s like, ‘Too much!’ I’m like, mom it’s $79 for a beautiful coat!’ Sometimes we adjust it according to my mom’s opinion.”

There are plenty of beautiful coats in the latest fall collection launch, along with a mixture of office-appropriate dresses in knits and tweeds, lacy party looks and some cool trousers.

“We average a collection every six weeks so we’re just constantly making adjustments and really paying attention to what the customer wants,” she says, adding that the see-now-shop-now model is “really exciting.”

Mendes’ long-time stylist Erin Walsh helped her craft each ensemble on the runway.

“Erin is so talented and I love how she makes everything feel very unique and very modern,” Mendes shared. “And the combinations she comes up with are very fun.”

But, the mom-of-two added that the head scarves seen on the models was her creative call. (It’s her go-to look!)

“For the scarves I just wanted something that was specifically me,but I also didn’t want the girls to feel uncomfortable,” she said. “I talked to the models beforehand and I just said if you prefer your hair a different way that’s fine. I want you guys to feel super comfortable, because not everyone feels comfortable with a head wrap.”

All the models also wore Mendes’ Circa beauty line, including a wine colored lipstick she’s loving right now.

“There’s a lip liner in wine that I am pretty obsessed with right now. And I am kinda getting into the whole like dark liner with the lighter [gloss] in between. I remember after I went through that stage I was like, ‘Oh my god, I will never go back there.’ But I am kinda wanting to go back there.”

Mendes added that the while the fashion show is a fun way to get the collection out there, feedback from fans of the brand is so important.

“It’s so important to read all the comments and really listen to the customer,” she said of developing her collection.

And she still gets excited when she seems someone in her line.

“Someone sent me a picture of this beautiful girl wearing the Sabrina dress on the subway and I was like, Ugh! Kill me now!'”
