So much for that promise!

After telling Kelly Ripa that she wasn’t planning to change her blonde hair, Demi Lovato debuted a new brunette ‘do on Wednesday night’s first
X Factor
live show. The singer kept her bangs, which she cut this summer, and wore her hair straight and down.

“It’s coming to fall and it’s harder to maintain a healthy skin tone, and when you’re going into winter it just sucks out the color of everyone,” Lovato told reporters after Thursday night’s X Factor. “So I tend to go dark during the holidays; it’s a nice contrast. There’s one thing about being blonde and pale, but I would rather be dark and pale.”

Lovato, a natural brunette, has tried a lot of looks in the past 12 months, from pink hair and blue tips to blonde locks and a bright-red ‘do.

“She’s a chameleon — she can do anything with her hair and makeup,” her makeup artist, Jill Powell, recently told PEOPLE. “She likes to change her look a lot — it’s fantastic. She embraces new trends.”

Lovato’s new look comes as a bit of a surprise — but one we’re definitely loving. Tell us: Do you prefer Lovato as a brunette or a blonde?
