Every year, Cannes Film Festival brings us some of the most glamorous red carpet hair and makeup moments of the year. But this year, mixed in among the glossy waves and classic red lips, were some surprisingly bright and bold makeup moments — from Kristen Stewart’s head-turning red eye shadow to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s bright lilac lip. And their stylists gave us the scoop on how to wear them, even if you don’t have a French Riviera red carpet in your future.
Stewart is a big fan of experimenting with her beauty look, especially on the red carpet. (Remember her out-of-this-world, galactic-inspired silver eye shadow moment?) And for the premiere of her latest film, Personal Shopper, on Tuesday evening, she amped up her eye shadow game with a winged-out, dusty red look, courtesy of Chanel makeup artist Kate Lee.
“The red was a burst of inspiration; I really did not want to do something predictable, and so after much collaboration and creative conversation with hairstylist Adir [Abergel] and Kristen, we decided on a pinky-red,” Lee tells PeopleStyle. “I wanted to do something bold, but still feminine.”
The makeup pro used Chanel Stylo Yeux Waterproof in Eros (an eyeliner from the 2016 fall collection) mixed with the Chanel Aqua Crayon Lip Colour Stick in Rosy lip pencil to create the dramatic smoky eye, then kept her lip neutral.
A statement shadow is great for a huge premiere, but for everyday, you might want to start a little smaller, by lining just a bit. “Red is a color that is naturally occurring in the skin and can be incredibly flattering to the color of the eye’s iris and add a pop of color that is unique and powerful,” Lee says. “People are quite rightly cautious with reds and pinks on the eyes, and this is smart, but the main way to keep this looking pretty and not shocking is to keep the inside of the eye clean.”
Lee says you can do this by using a cream-colored eyeliner (like Chanel Le Crayon Khol Intense Eye Pencil in Clair) on the waterlines to keep the inner eye clean, and then keep the rest of your complexion clear by blending out “any ruddiness” with concealer to keep all of the attention on the eye.

The show-stopping makeup moments don’t end there! Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai Bachchan also got playful with her makeup palette, hitting the carpet in not one but two jaw-dropping makeup looks.
For the premiere of From The Land Of The Moon on Sunday, the actress stepped out with a vibrant lavender matte lip, which was created by makeup artist Charlotte Willer, using L’Oréal Paris Eye Pencil Color Riche Le Khol in Breezy Lavender as a base and then painted both lips with L’Oréal Paris Infallible Matte Max in I Gotta Feeling. The makeup pro teamed the statement lip with a subtle smoky gray eye and slight flush on her cheeks to keep the vivid purple-hued pout the focal point.
“I decided to make a pop of unexpected color on the lips, which no one would expect, for an edgy and elegant look,” Willer tells PeopleStyle of the vibrant lip look.

And just days before, Rai Bachchan also opted even more drama, but this time with a bold blue eye — an ombré eyeliner and smoky eye combo, which is a “blend from dark turquoise to a lighter blue” — also created by Willer, for the screening of Slack Bay on Friday. The look was created with L’Oréal Paris Quad Les Ombrés Red Carpet Blue Collection and accented it with a glossy nude lip. (Want to try it at home? Willer recommends blending the colors out into a wing that suits your eye shape.)
“Aish trusts me totally, and I just let my inspiration flow whenever I do her makeup,” Willer tells PeopleStyle. “Cannes is a good place to try out new looks and some unexpected colors.”
And lastly, Adriana Lima proves a bright red lip never goes out of style! But for a fresh, summery take on the shade, the supermodel picked a poppy, tangerine hue to pair with her sun goddess glow at the Chopard Wild Party on Monday evening.
Ready to upgrade your traditional seasonal statement lip like the Victoria’s Secret Angel? Swipe on a shade like Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Matte Lipstick in Feelin Myself or NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Red Square, and then add a few coats of mascara and a little blush to let the lip shine.
