Cindy Crawford's Closet Is as Amazing as You Expect (But Don't Get Any Ideas, Kaia!)
This closet is that amazing
Cindy Crawford has been everywhere this week promoting her book Becoming, but the one place she hasn’t taken us yet? Inside her closet. The supermodel (and her supermodel-in-training daughter, Kaia Gerber) invited The Thick over to take a look at the luxurious room in which she stashes her wardrobe.
Kaia dishes that among the many perks to having a fashion icon for a mom is, you guessed it, the stuff inside that huge closet. “Even now, I’ll go through your closet and find the most amazing clothes. ‘90s Versace, Jimmy Choo shoes … it’s the best closet to play dress up in, ever. All [my friends and I would] do is try on your clothes, and you would photograph us.”
Says Cindy to her daughter: “This is a dream closet. It’s definitely my sanctuary. It’s funny because you think it’s normal, so now you’ve converted an extra bedroom into your closet … If you ever move to New York, good luck. You’ll never find an apartment with a closet like this. I worked very hard to get it!”
Mom Cindy is well aware that her daughter is going to have to put in similar hard work to make it in the modeling biz — and has expressed concern before. But luckily, Kaia, 14, seems to be on the same page. “It’s good to have someone like you who can guide me along the way. I should be a teenager while I’m a teenager,” she tells her mom. “You didn’t start modeling till 16, and only really got into it at 18, and look at how successful your career has been. That said, I want to pursue it, so when opportunities present themselves … I’m more than happy to take them on because it’s what I love.”
She’s also well aware of the pitfalls of social media, saying, “People expect you to be doing something cool all the time. In a normal life, that’s not happening. If you only share your best pictures, or your Facetuned self, the thought of people seeing you as you truly are can be scary … It’s reassuring to know even Cindy Crawford doesn’t wake up looking like ‘Cindy Crawford.’ That’s helped me learn to be happy with myself as I am.”
And Crawford can relate to that experience growing up in the spotlight. “That’s not unlike fashion photography, which is all about details like where the light is or which frame the photographer picks,” she explains. “But now people consider those in their everyday lives. Sometimes they can be so worried about getting the perfect image to post that they forget to live in the moment.”
