Halle Berry has always been a woman who can pull off any hairstyle her heart desires. From a pixie cut to chest-length natural waves and everything in between, the actress has never shied away from a style, easily pulling it off without a second thought. But Berry’s latest cut might be her most daring, difficult and fashion-forward to date. The 49-year-old actress debuted a freshly shorn bowl cut while arriving in N.Y.C.

The last time we saw the actress out in public was at the MTV Movie Awards where she sported her standard shoulder-lento lob with piecey bangs. But since then, she’s clearly taken up her do several inches, arriving at JFK Airport with her strands now only barely longer than her bangs. Bowl cuts generally get a pretty bad wrap, but Halle’s wavy texture totally saves this cut from falling into the bad hair day category, giving volume and the look’s sense of undone effortlessness.

As women who rocked an accidental bowl cut or two in our lifetimes courtesy of our mom’s hairdresser “skills,” we wish Berry was around to make us feel better about the look, because of course she pulls it off.
But why go so short? The star’s movie Kidnap is in post-production, and maybe she really chose to dive into the role with a daring cut. Maybe she has a new wig master à la Kylie Jenner and Tokyo Stylez and they are “trying out new lewks.” Or maybe her daughter Nahla accidentally cut her own hair — and Halle cut hers in solidarity. (We actually know the real reason: It’s cut for her role in Kingsmen, which is currently filming in London. But we can’t help speculating for fun.)
