Best & Worst Summer Trends
BEST: WHITE EYELET & LACE
It isn’t just for doilies: This season celebs including Halle Berry and Jessica Simpson are stepping out in ultra-feminine lace frocks. “It’s a fresh take on a traditional fabric,” says PEOPLE associate style editor Clarissa Cruz.
WORST: AXL ROSE-STYLE HEADBANDS
Welcome to the (Malibu) jungle! Nicole Richie and Lindsay Lohan look like “hair-metal band castoffs” in their beach headscarves – a throwback to the Guns N’ Roses frontman, says Cruz.
BEST: ROLLED SHORTS
A more casual alternative to tailored walking shorts, the rolled variety is a chic way to showcase your gams (as seen on Rachel Bilson and Kate Moss). “And you can wear them with everything from sandals to cowboy boots,” says Cruz.
WORST: PANT SUITS
The ’80s-inspired ensemble (modeled by Tori Spelling and Kate Beckinsale) is “very hard to carry off,” says Cruz. “It’s easy to end up looking like a refugee from the Dynasty fashion closet.”
BEST: POLKA DOTS
A perennial favorite, the print (worn by Jessica Alba and Mischa Barton) has been updated for the season in lighter fabrics such as chiffon. “Accessorize with a belt and you’ll really give the silhouette some shape,” says Cruz.
WORST: OVERLY OVERSIZED SUNGLASSES
From Jackie O to Jackie Oh-No, the massive shades make stars such as Beyoncé, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie “look more alienlike than anything else,” says Cruz. “It’s a fine line between chic and ridiculous.”
BEST: KIMONO-STYLE DRESSES
“Someone who is stick-skinny or someone who just had a baby can wear them,” says Cruz of the versatile Japanese-inspired frocks (as seen on Jennifer Lopez and Sandra Bullock).
BEST: DENIM PEDAL PUSHERS
The fitted cut-off jeans (worn by Beyoncé, Naomi Watts and Lindsay Lohan) are a sophisticated answer to last summer’s Daisy Dukes, and are “more wearable than short shorts.”
WORST: CAMOUFLAGE CAPS
In an attempt to go incognito, celebs such as Eva Longoria, Scarlett Johansson and Nicollette Sheridan are sporting “the latest incarnation of the tired trucker hat. It’s a look that should just be put to rest,” says Cruz.
Kate Bosworth and Sarah Jessica Parker have been adding “a rock ‘n’ roll vibe to summery pieces” by layering dresses and flowing tops with the retro pants.
A continuation of spring’s nautical trend, the print (as seen on Mischa Barton, Molly Sims and Nicky Hilton) works for day or evening. “There are so many ways to wear it – on shorts, a top or on a dress,” says Cruz.
WORST: GLOVE-CUFF HYBRID
The hand accessories (worn by Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton) “are the girls’ version of last year’s wallet chain,” says Cruz. “It’s not quite a glove, not quite a cuff, but is definitely silly.”
