The East Coast has been experiencing a heat wave the past few days, so for any of us in N.Y.C., it’s hard to understand why exactly anyone would choose to wear leather right now, which seems to be the fabric of choice on the West Coast.

So we did some digging. And it turns out the weather out in L.A. has been just as hot as in N.Y.C. On Saturday it reached 87°, and Sunday saw a 92° high temperature. The lows hit 65° and 72° respectively (barely cooler than N.Y.C.’s nightly mid-70s streak). Yet, stars like Vanessa Hudgens, Kylie Jenner and Selena Gomez are piling on the hot-weather leather.

Gomez hung out with friends for dinner on Saturday wearing not one but three cold-weather pieces. First, skintight leather and suede Alice & Olivia pants. Second, closed-toe black boots, and third, a leopard Maje jacket. We can only hope the restaurant blasted the A.C. for her.

Last Monday (temps were 84°), Jenner wore ripped 7 For All Mankind skinny jeans, a white shirt and a cropped tan moto jacket for a trip to the nail salon. And last Saturday (79°), Hudgens chose a worn leather jacket to top off her skin-baring, crisscross shirt. (Could the deep V-neck really be that chilling?)

Is this just more proof that stars are impervious to extreme temperatures? (Remember during New York Fashion Week last winter when everyone ditched their coats in sub-zero N.Y.C. temps?) Or maybe there’s some Hollywood code we all don’t know about that says one must always be a season pusher for style? Your guess is as good as ours.
