While the fashions at the AMAs were all about sheer, skin-baring dresses that left little to the imagination, the beauty looks, on the other hand, were all about making a major statement. From bold, deep-hued lips, to severe, slicked-back ponytails, this red carpet was not meant for cosmetic wallflowers. Plus, these trends don’t only look pitch perfect at an award ceremony, they’ll also look ideal on anyone who wants to look a little more glam than usual as they gather around a turkey with family this week.

Of course, the host for the evening Gigi Hadid showcased one of the major hair trends of the night — effortlessly slicked-back hair. But instead of the standard wet-look locks we’ve seen on many red carpets of the past, such as on Kim Kardashians at this year’s VMAs, this style kept things more windswept with lots of volume on top, as can also be seen on Jenny McCarthy and Hannah Jeter.

The structured cat eye is a classic red carpet makeup look for a reason. Whether subtle with just a pop of highlighter at the tear duct, like Behati, pristine and architectural like Taraji P. Henson, or slightly smoky with a glossy lid like Lady Gaga‘s, there’s no wrong way to sport this style.

And as any woman who lived through the ’80s can tell you, pulling off blue shadow is no easy feat. But Cam, Zoë Saldana and Nina Dobrev made it look totally easy, relegating the often overwhelming blue color to a light wash across their eyelids, and keeping the rest of their beauty look simple and natural.

There’s something about fall that makes every girl want to ditch her tried-and-true red lip, and go for a richer, deep berry.

Forever the red carpet risk-taker, Taraji went with a deep, but bold purple shade that gave a pop of color to her otherwise monochromatic look. Hailee Steinfeld demonstrated the perfect transitional lip to get into the season, a matte pinky-purple shade, while Cheryl Burke went for a deep crimson hue we’re sure everyone will be dying to copycat over the holidays.

And finally, while the high pony may be Ariana Grande‘s signature style, there were lots of ladies feeling the look on Sunday night’s red carpet. While supermodels Heidi Klum and Karlie Kloss kept theirs clean and slicked-back, Ciara gave hers a Brigitte Bardot flair with some messy side bangs and a peachy-nude lip.
