Alex Rodriguez Spent 'Several Months' Shopping for Jennifer Lopez's $1.75 Million-Plus Engagement Ring
The former MLB star picked out the engagement ring entirely on his own
The former Major League Baseball player spent “several months” choosing the whopping diamond, a source tells PEOPLE, landing on a 16 carat emerald-cut flawless diamond ring worth over $1.75 million.
A source also said that Rodriguez “did everything on his own with the ring” and noted that “It was a complete surprise [to Lopez].”
And she appears to be very happy with his choices, announcing the news of their engagement with a photo of her hand in Rodriguez’s that prominently displayed her massive sparkler. She captioned the pic with eight heart emojis, while Rodriguez shared the same photo writing, “She said yes.”
The baseball star popped the question with a romantic beachside proposal in the Bahamas on Saturday, and Lopez has been overwhelmed with joy ever since. “Jennifer is ecstatic and so are their families and friends. Very few people knew Alex planned on proposing. It was very much a surprise for Jennifer,” the source said. “It was just how Alex wanted it.”
Rodriguez opened up about the experience on his Instagram story.
“There aren’t many words to share with you, only feelings. Gratitude. Excitement. And just … joy,” he wrote alongside another sweet photo from the proposal. “We know there is work to do to keep building a family and future we can be proud of, and we can’t do it without all of you. We are so thankful for all your messages of love and congratulations.”
While they aren’t in wedding planning mode yet, a source said their kids will “definitely” play a huge role in their upcoming wedding. Lopez and ex-husband Marc Anthony, 50, have 11-year-old twins Maximilian “Max” David and Emme Maribel, while Rodriguez and ex-wife Cynthia Scurtis, 46, share daughters Ella, 10, and Natasha, 14.
“For them both, they are still all about their family with the four kids. Their initial strong attraction for each other would have quickly faded if they had not been able to come together as a family,” a source told PEOPLE.

“Their kids all accepted each other and got along from the beginning. It’s always tricky when you merge families, but Jennifer and Alex did a great job from the start. The kids are amazing together. And they have wanted Jennifer and Alex to get married for a long time. They will all definitely be a huge part of the wedding,” the source added.
