By now you’ve already seen all the gorgeous gowns from Sunday’s ACM Awards, so it’s time to talk about the most buzzworthy beauty moments. Let’s start with Carrie Underwood‘s amazing side-swept waves, because, well, they’re amazing.

We were so enamored of Underwood’s old Hollywood-inspired tresses, we had to get some more insight straight from her makeup artist and hair stylist of nine years, Melissa Schleicher. You may not have noticed, but the first step to her look was a subtle color change.

“Her hair is a bit darker now,” Schleicher explains. “She’s naturally blonde in the roots, and we hadn’t highlighted her hair in seven months — we just let it go. And then I took her to the salon, darkened her hair a shade and lightened the ends quite a bit for an ombré look.”

As for her flawless soft waves, Schleicher used two different tools — the José Eber curling wand and the 3/4 barrel InStyler. “First, I blew out the top of her hair, and I used Kerastase Mousse Bouffante to smooth it and give it some root, before curling,” Schleicher said. “Once the curling was finished, I topped with Shu Uemura Touch Of Gloss, which is amazing for a flexible texture and helps tame any flyaways. Then the trick is to brush it out, for that soft, loose feel. I finished with Oribe’s superfine hairspray for a moveable hold.”

For her makeup look, Schleicher created a sultry silver eye — using Almay’s Intense i-Color Smoky-i Kit for hazel eyes — to coordinate with her metallic beaded fringe Oscar de la Renta dress.

“If you are going to have dark eyes, don’t do dark lips too. Carrie really likes to follow that,” Schleicher said. “She really likes the blush too. We have to tone it down sometimes. She loves blush and black eye liner.”

From manes to manis, Shakira (who made her crossover into country last night performing her new duet “Medicine” with Blake Shelton) had the most detailed nail art on the carpet, sporting black-and-white tips with portraits of her one-year-old son Milan and partner Gerard Piqué painted on them. Though this has been done before — Katy Perry pioneered the trend with her Russell Brand-themed nails at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards and her Royal Wedding tips in 2011 — we always like a little sweet style touch.

And lastly, ACM Album of the Year winner Kacey Musgraves brought us the matchy-matchy makeup look of the evening, coordinating her baby-blue belted gown with coordinating eye shadow. And if you’re dying to re-create her look, all the Pixi by Petra products she’s sporting (like the Mineral Palette in Emerald Gold on her eyelids) are really affordable and available at Target.
