Starling Marte clinched a win for the Pittsburgh Pirates after 18 grueling innings against the Washington Nationals on Sunday – but the game’s true MVP was seated in the stands.

The real hero of the 5 hour, 48 minute game was a young Pirates fan who reminded weary baseball fans everywhere that America’s favorite pastime is far more than just a game.

For those precious hours, this young, towheaded boy gave one of the greatest displays of fandom this country has ever seen.

Pirates’ manager Clint Hurdle described the marathon matchup as a “crazy game” but the looks on the young fan’s face reveal it was more like a rollercoaster of emotions.
