Soccer Power Couple – Who Wear Jersey Nos. 2 and 14 – Pick Valentine's Day to Reveal They're Married!
Sydney Leroux and Dom Dwyer plan to celebrate after she competes for the U.S. in next summer's women's World Cup
Given the numbers on their respective jerseys – she wears No. 2 for the Seattle Reign FC, and he wears No. 14 for the Sporting Kansas City franchise – soccer power couple Sydney Leroux and Dom Dwyer picked 2/14 as the ideal date to reveal a bit of happy news:
The Valentine’s Day announcement, shared exclusively with PEOPLE, confirms the intimate January wedding of the globe-trotting professional athletes, who are both 24. And it comes well-ahead of women’s World Cup play that begins in June when Leroux – a gold medalist with the 2012 U.S. women’s Olympic team – will compete again as a member of the U.S. team.
“Juggling our careers and relationship is very difficult, which is why we decided to wed privately in January,” the pair, who met in 2013 and started dating last year, said in a statement. “We wanted to announce our marriage at an appropriate time when we were together and at a time that suited our families. We also wanted to make sure that we told all of our close friends and teammates before we announced it publicly.”
The women’s World Cup will be staged across six cities in Canada, with the final on July 5 in Vancouver. The U.S team kicks off competition with a match June 8 against Australia in Winnipeg.
“We just bought a house in Kansas City and are planning on celebrating our marriage with close friends and family after the World Cup,” says the couple. “We couldn’t be happier and can’t wait to start our lives together!”
