When Mexican skier Hubertus von Hohenlohe hits the slopes at Sochi for the 2014 Winter Olympics, he will do it in style.

The 55-year old Olympian isn’t expected to take home any medals, but he’s already won the title of the most interesting Olympian in the world from NBC, who is airing the games this year, after he unveiled his eye-catching competition garb. Von Hohenlohe told NBC that they can call him “the Mariachi Olympic Prince.”

However, fans might also call him Lucky, Dusty or Ned. When von Hohenlohe heads out of the gates in the men s slalom race in February, he’ll sport a mariachi-themed ski suit complete with built-in bolero jacket, ruffled shirt and a dapper red tie and cummerbund, similar to Chevy Chase, Steve Martin and Martin Short in the 1986 film Three Amigos.

This isn’t the first time that von Hohenlohe has represented his birth nation in style. At the 2010 Games in Vancouver, his sports attire was made to look like a Mexican “desperado” outfit complete with bandoliers.

Von Hohenlohe – who goes by Prince Hubertus due to his relation to a possibly extinct German royal family – is the only athlete representing Mexico at the Winter Games in Sochi. Although he was raised in Austria and currently lives there, he is eligible to compete for Mexico because he was born in Mexico City.

Until I went to Mexico recently to make a documentary, I never realized what a beautiful, amazing, rich past and culture they have and what a proud people they are, he told NBC, adding: “The power to have your own identity is so strong and something I believe in so I want to give it a go in a very cool, elegant way. I want to celebrate who they are, but of course in my own style.”

These will be the sixth Games that von Hohenlohe will compete in on behalf of Mexico. He’s never medaled, and he isn’t expected to do so in the slalom at Sochi, but he has his sartorial pursuits to keep him in the headlines.
