Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross won’t win the gold this year.

The beach volleyball players lost to Brazil’s team of Ágatha Bednarczuk and Bárbara Seixas. The Brazilian team won the first game 22-20, and the second game 21-18.

Unsurprisingly, the enthusiastic Rio crowd was overwhelmingly pulling for local heroes Bednarczuk and Seixas – although the atmosphere in the beachside stadium was collegial and friendly towards the American fans.

Bednarczuk and Seixas will face Germany’s Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst for the gold. (The losing team will take the silver.)

Walsh Jennings and Ross will play against Brazil’s other team, Larissa França and Talita Antunes for the bronze medal.

Before Tuesday night’s match, Walsh Jennings was on a winning streak, having taken the gold in 2004, 2008 and 2012 with partner Misty May-Treanor. Ross won the silver in 2012 with partner Jennifer Kessy.

Both the bronze and the gold medal matches will be played on Wednesday night.
