SET OF EIGHT REGENCY CARVED MAHOGANY DINING CHAIRSEngland, circa 1810Item # 904KJT18Z An exquisite set of eight dining chairs from the first quarter of the 19th century, they are crafted of solid and dense grained mahogany throughout all primary surfaces. Note the crisply carved crest rails with motifs of intertwined infinite-rings surrounding eight-leaf rosettes and separated by inverted anthemion. Bellflower relief carvings line the stiles around an X-form piercedettes and separated by inverted anthemion. Bellflower relief carvings line the stiles around an X-form pierced splat back. The set includes six side chairs and two open-arm chairs, these with carved acanthus on the curved arms raised over relief-carved waterleaf embellished vasiform arm supports. Typical of the period, the front legs are fluted with a standard Neoclassical leg with a ring of carved foliage around the top and terminating in simple ring-turned ball feet. All eight chairs are upholstered in an attractive coral damask, the undersides left exposed so that the tidy joinery is evident. Originally the joints were locked together with glued tenon-mortising supplemented by diagonally set braces with a half-dovetail on either side locking the apron together; over time additional triangular corner blocks have been added to supplement this.A fine set that is restrained in form, exquisite in carved treatments and rich in surface, they make a powerful dining set for the Classical interior.Measurements: 32 1/4" H x 23 3/4" W x 22" D x 17" H to seat [arm chairs]; 32 1/2" H x 19 1/2" W x 20" D x 17 1/2" H to seat [side chairs]Condition Report:Early finish with color variation and wear; arms with plugged repairs at joint with apron and a few chair corners also with a plugged screw repair; some triangular corner blocking added to underside, some diagonal dovetailed braces also replaced; some splicing to the interior edges of the rails under the upholstery; one chair leg with an old repaired crack on the inside of the leg corner; one chair crest rail with old repaired crack at right stile; read more
