Tin wall sculptures, 'Regal Hearts' (pair) (Mexico)

Working in the handicraft traditions of Oaxaca, Mexican duo Aida and Cristino Lavariega handcraft this pair of wall sculptures from tin. Each heart-shaped sculpture evokes Christian symbolism and retablos. Magnificent flames erupt from the smaller, cross-adorned heart while a crown rests atop the other. The tin is treated using a technique called "bluing," which results in the sculptures' characteristic pigment and protects them from rust.
