Ceramic figurine, 'Ivory Offering' (Mexico)

Decorated with glyphs, a skull stares toward the future from the pre-Hispanic past. Angel Cer n creates a somber image inspired by the tzompantli, altars where the skulls of sacrificial victims were displayed. Seen in the Toltec, Mixtec and Maya cultures, the tzompantli is related principally to the Aztec, or Mexica. They are depicted in the Ram rez Codex, and early historians report six tzompantli in Tenochtitlan, the Mexica capital.
